Another day of golf in Scotland

Our caddie yesterday told us that the course we played today, Murcar, was "rubbish" compared to Royal Aberdeen. However we did not find this the case at all. Although the winds weren't quite as bad, the fairways were actually narrower and the elevation changes were remarkable. The rough was a little thinner and there were less blind shots which made it a little easier. Pictures tend not to do the course any justice but there are a couple where you can see just how narrow the fairways are and all the hills, valleys, and crevices that the ball tends to find. Rarely is there a flat shot or putt for that matter. Either it's downhill, uphill, sidehill, or kick-you-in-the-a** hill which is mostly what happens. Either way, it was a good match today as we were never more than 2 holes up or down on each other, but dad prevailed, winning 91-93 and won the match play 2 up. We agreed it's probably the 3rd best course out of four so far, but is fighting with #2, Nairn for that spot.
We were going to go sightseeing afterward but didn't find much that we wanted to see in Aberdeen. We've been downtown the past two nights which has been very busy compared to what we expected (people everywhere up and down the sidewalk around lunch time). We'll head downtown again soon and eat dinner down there and enjoy another night in a European city.

When we were driving back through downtown after the round today there was a graduation of some sort and people were walking in all dressed up. Saw at least 2 more kilts which brings the total to 3. Super exciting.

Total Score through 4 rounds:
Dad: 371
Justin: 390

ouch.

Also, the pictures are posted from yesterday too.

After looking at this last picture, you might be wondering, "well where's the fairway?" Answer: Exactly

STOP IT, Bob . . . I've already emailed Justin to take the international phone out of his pocket (insert famous quote by Mae West, the queen of sexual innuendo: "Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just HAPPY to see me?). . . another favorite Mae West quote:

"How tall are you son?"
"I'm 5 ft. 11 inches, ma'am."
"Let's forget about your 5 ft. & talk about your 11 inches."

Justin - "Happy 26th Birthday!" Predicting you're going to BEAT your dad today in golf!

The courses we're seeing are AMAZING. . . BROAD fairway vistas, TALL grass, LARGE greens - no doubt appreciated more with the naked eye than thru a camera lens.

Justin - you do a terrific job of 'drawing us in' through the wonderful depictions of your surroundings.

LOVED the picture of the two of you showing the different elevations of this course. You've really captured the essence of Scottish golf!

Can't wait to hear about Carnoustie.

CHEERS to your birthday!
LOVE, Mom :-)

"G'day!" (oops, wrong continent ... but, right sentiments :-)

Clicked on the website you blogged - The Carnoustie Golf Hotel (or is it the Clubhouse?) looks like a magnificent castle!

Hope you enjoyed your birthday round, Justin, at what Tiger Woods credits as being "the most challenging, if not the finest course in the WORLD!"

Around 12:15 p.m. Chgo. time (as the timer ticked down), I was next in line to take CONTROL of the webcam from Carnoustie's clock tower, but it ended up NOT working in my Windows XP (or there's a good chance I didn't know what the F*** I was doing! - you know me & computers :-( I was hoping to catch some 'live action' on holes #1, 16 or 18.

Did a little research on the town of Angus - Scotland's Birthplace in Carnoustie Country. . . said that Angus offers miles of unspoiled charm, of idyllic beaches, unspoiled glens, rugged mountains & breath-taking scenery (sounds like New Zealand, eh Rick?).

In an area of just 2,200 kilometres . . . rolling countryside, rugged cliffs, seaside towns, market burghs, turreted castles & ancient relics stand side by side. Hope you & your dad found time to explore this rich environment!

I'll toast to you ... and Jack (& Coke) tonight as the "Four Laker's" celebrate Jack Herr's 60th birthday at "Quigley's"!

CHEERS! Love, Mom :-)

Justin - In case you & your dad were wondering how I'm able to attend Jack's b-day party tonight . . . it didn't work out going to Kim's brother's lakehouse in Indiana today ... & boating tomorrow. A friend of Kim's parents was placed 'in hospice care' July 5th, and passed away this week. The wake & funeral are tomorrow.

Remember when Uncle Chuck was dying of cancer, and we flew to AZ to see him? He was eventually placed 'in hospice care' and passed away the following month. Didn't mean to be a downer. . . remembering the good times - Uncle Chuck teaching you Cribbage (see - you're BEATING your dad), "Shoney's", and 'Chuck spots'!

Love you, Mom :-)
